Flo Estes
Flo is a singer-songwriter in Chicago and has performed at Space, Uncommon Ground and Jarvis Pottery. Her cd is “Jolly on the Inside”, a collection of songs navigating the world of loneliness and loss and meditating on our place in a troubled world. Before retiring she was a union organizer and teacher. She was inspired to perform a story by her story-telling sister, Anna McKinley.
Anthony Giuliano
Anthony is a New Jersey native but has loved living here in Chicago for the past year and a half. He has explored many interests ranging from acting on stage, to being a collegiate cheerleader, to now working as a software developer. In his free time, Anthony enjoys traveling, rock climbing, and philosophizing with friends. He believes that the most important thing in life is the people we share it with and that storytelling is one of the best ways to celebrate that.
Robert Knowles
Robert works in banking in Chicago, and lives in the city with his wife, Kat, and their two dogs, Melky and Oscar. Robert enjoys running, reading, and watching sports; his latest hobby is DuoLingo, and he hopes to soon be telling stories in German. He and his wife spend their weekends exploring Chicago’s bars and restaurants, though Robert prefers to stick to the Homer Simpson food groups: beer and doughnuts. Robert and Kat also like to travel, and continue to pick up new stories with every trip.
Millie Rey
Millie is a teacher and coach who has spent the bulk of her professional life helping people write confidently and complete their projects. (She recently started a company, Write to Do, to help more people. Look out for writetodo.com coming soon!) For Millie, finding one’s voice and saying what needs to be said or done is of critical importance to the world and our lives. Perhaps that’s why she has stubbornly kept working on her PhD in sociology and may finally finish really soon. (Say a prayer for her!) As for other endeavors, she has been a scholarship student at Joel Hall Dancers and a professional dancer with a Colombian folk dance company – Estampa Colombiana.
Steve Samuel
Steve fell in love with words his freshman year of high school where his freshman year English teacher took his class to a poetry slam. At the time Steve was just trying to get out of school, but to his surprise he enjoyed every minute of it. He noticed how people were able to use words to communicate their hardships, their trials, their life lessons. This is what Steve wants to do as he pursues to tell stories as true and as meaningful as possible. He is also a critical care nurse, loves basketball in all forms, and also enjoys a nice cold Stella.
Amrit Sooch
Amrit is a digital marketer and writer eagerly anticipating the soft launch of her debut poetry book, "Pain & Paper," just in time for this event. Writing stories was her childhood escape, and as an adult, rediscovered its therapeutic power. During her story, she plans to recite a poem and relate it back to a life event. It's a chance for her weave together her roles as both a marketer and a storyteller, hoping to encourage everyone to dive into her book!
Scott Whitehair (Host)
Scott Whitehair is a storyteller, teacher, and producer living in Chicago, IL. He is the producer of This Much Is True, Chicago's longest running monthly personal narrative series, creator of Story Lab Chicago, which has put 700+ new storytellers on stage since 2011, and director of Do Not Submit, a grassroots network of open mics across the city bringing people together to connect with each other. Scott tells anywhere someone will listen, including The National Storytelling Festival Exchange Place, Steppenwolf Theater, the historic Green Mill, and on NPR, the Risk podcast, and Siruis XM. He is a frequent guest instructor at the city's top universities, and his personal narrative class has been selling out every month since 2012. Scott is in demand as a coach and trainer, spending his days helping individuals, companies, and non-profits develop their voices as storytellers. In 2014, he was the featured instructor at Hong Kong Story Worthy Week, headlined by David Sedaris, and in 2015 taught an intensive at All Hallows College in Dublin.
